If I were to create an fullblown online store Comersus would be my choice. I mean, being able to offer variations (colors for example) and built in handling of selling digital goods, that's really nice.

Hosted at Sourceforge. Features a real admin panel, template engine and basically this means a full featured shopping and order management solution.
Lots of things to get going, I had some trouble with paths, but  for instance. Still - sourcecode is easily read and it therefore would allow you to do some pretty nice customizations if needed. I never tested it out all the way, cause for my particular solution it was too heavy. While the screenshots I am showing here are really looking bad since I didn't bother downloading the images I saw directly this was nothing for me to build upon. I know - this example is not meant to be more, but all I am saying is that there are more solid foundations to start from if you are about to implement a asp shopping cart.

While Access as database backend might not be the hottest solution as of tiday, it sure does it job pretty well. I also think it would not be too much work to upgrade it to SQL Server yourself.
